Jamila Hammami is an educator and a SIFI-Certified Field Instructor. After a decade of grassroots, community-based education focused on lectures, training, and workshops, Hammami began teaching as a professor at Columbia University in 2017 in the Master's of Social Work Department. Hammami’s teaching background spans Community Organizing and Social Movements, Community-Based Justice, Ethnic Studies (including Africana and Arab studies), and Border and Carceral Studies.

Hammami is trained in Open Educational Resources (OER) and was part of an IRB-approved, grant-funded study, "Pedagogical Change Through the Use of Open Educational Resources (OER): A Collaborative Assessment from CUNY Adjunct Faculty in the Humanities and Social Sciences teaching in 2020". Hammami, along with their colleagues and fellow researchers, Disu, Dressel, Madoré, & Reed (2022) released an accompanying and acclaimed publication titled "'The amount of labor we do for free' and other contradictions. A collective inquiry into the pedagogical choices of CUNY adjunct and graduate student instructors who taught with free-of-charge materials during the year 2020." through CUNY Academic Works.

Hammami received their BSW in 2010 from the University of North Texas, MSW in 2013 from Silberman Social Work at Hunter College with a focus on Community Organizing and Program Development, and their Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) Certification from Columbia University's Social Work Program in 2015, and beginning in 2018, five years of coursework at CUNY Graduate Center, studying Social Welfare with a focus on Human Rights, Borders and Carceral Studies, Community Organizing, and Resistance. Hammami began supervising students in the field in 2014, and social work students (BSW and MSW) shortly after. They have supervised numerous students from a range of fields, including Bachelor's and Master's students in Social Work and Public Health, and they also supervise across degree programs for Undergraduate and Graduate students in New York State and the U.S.
